OUT OF CONTROL 2013
To Have or to Be
Festival for New Music Theater
April 5th April - May 12th 2013

Dear participants!
Our sixth edition of the one and only Festival for New Music Theater in – 2013 OUT OF CONTROL – is the biggest up to now: between April 5th and Mai 12th four productions are on tap with altogether 25 performances and at least 4 events of our accompagning scientific programm of cultural mediation. Áll four are World Premieres or Austrian First Nights, two of them have been comissioned by us, all realised and coproduced with prominent national and international partners like Münchener Biennale, SESCSP Brazil, Wiener Festwochen a.m.o.

2013 OUT OF CONTROL's motto TO HAVE OR TO BE, starting Fromm Erich Fromms theses (published under the same title artists and investigators of different continents where animated to search for links to current themes and debates. Especially in our times of a universal dominance of "Having" it is most important, to scrutinize this dominance artistically in its diverse forms and radical consequences.
The two comissioned productions, BIRD.SHIT.ISLAND!, a coproduction withdas.bernhard.ensemble, and Franz Koglmanns comic marketing opera JOIN!, a coproduction with Wiener Festwochen, are dealing with the real and fictious consequences of a grotesque, absurd and disastrous bias of "Having" by using completely different music-theatrical forms of expression: an extemporized Opera about the most incredible story of capitalism and a swinging Fiction-Economy-Opera.

The two Austrian First Nights AMAZONAS TILT! by Klaus Schedland AMAZONAS A QUEDA DO CÉU!, with music and samples by Brazilian composer Tato Taborda, are finally to be experienced in Vienna after their tour from Munich to Rotterdam and São Paulo.
TILT! is based on the "a report of discovery“ of Sir Walter Raleigh from 1595, who describes the people inhabiting the rain forest from the European perspective of the conquistadores. Klaus Schedl transmitts this texts, which clearly exposes the intention of exploitation and destruction, in a soundscape, which make´s the distance of this historic report just as perceiveable as its topicality at the same time. A QUEDA DO CÉU! has been developed in a cooperation with Yanomami-shamans in Brazil: it depicts the white conquistadores, invading the Amazonian rainforest in the view of the indigens and gives an idea of another way of "to be", another way of thinking, of another world of perception and sensitivity represented by this indigene culture in the rain forest, which does not know anything about property and which produced a language, that literally completely lacks a word like "to have".
Altogether more than 100 artists from all over the world are expecting you at 4 times New Music Theater. With you always will experience the unexpected, the hidden, what is to be discovered - which assumes your curiousity. To satisfy this curiousity is our mission.

See you - at MuseumsQuartier and at DAS OFF THEATER.

BIRD.SHIT.ISLAND!
An extemporized Opera about the most incredible story of capitalism from WEIGEL/VOSS – das.bernhard.ensemble
World Premiere / Comissioned by netzzeit
Music: Lonesome Andi Haller
Coproduction of das.bernhard.ensemble, DAS OFF THEATER and netzzeit

For millions of years some billions of migratory birds rested on a coral reef, amidst the Pacific. What they left there did not only build the Island called Nauru, but also granted the world the most unbelieveable story about capitalism.
Caused by a gigantic phosphatdeposit prosperity poured itself over the natives after achieving political independence. From one day to the other they became the richest people in the whole world, stopped to work,
stuffed themselves with fast food, moved around only by car and forgot everything about their culture. To keep their "luck" alive, they sacrificed most of the Island´´s surface by devastating it through the exploitation of phosphat. The financial troubles started, when this precious deposit started to run down in the 1990-ties and the state assets got lost by dubious investmets. Nauru lost - within 30 years everything and came down to the level of a developing country, which has got nothing at all to be developed.
For das.bernhard.ensemble, well known for its experimental way of theater work, this not so well known story was the initation to develope an improvised "Opera", as a similitude, how unbridled dedication to economic growth, consumism and pursuit of profit lead first into wealth, than in sweet idleness and finally into destruction.
With Albane Troehler, Grischka Voss, Kajetan Dick, Andi Haller, Michael Welz und Ernst Kurt Weigel

Direction and concept by Grischka Voss and Ernst Kurt Weigel, Stage- and costume-design: Thea Hoffmann-Axthelm, Choreografý: Peter Beil

AMAZONAS TILT!
Music Theater about Amazonia based on Sir Walter Raleigh
Austrian First Night
Music by Klaus Schedl
Text & Dramaturgy: Roland Quitt based on Sir Walter Raleigh
Comissioned by the City of Munich for Münchener Biennale

Sir Walter Raleigh left in 1595 with forty men for South America to explore the Orinoko. Near to nowadays land of the Yanomami he supposed the location of the city, which the Spaniards called "El Dorado". His report „The discoverie of the large rich and bewtiful empyre of Guiana“ vofrom 1596, has been written out of the perspective of early discovery and anticipates the logic of colonial conquest and appropriation.
Text-base of TILT! are excerpts out of Ralieghs "report of discovery", which has been remixedin an impressive collage by Roland Quitt, by following the subliminal traces of Raleighs report and therewith revealing them as a basic pattern of European thinking. These text fragments out of European perspective of discoverers and conquistadores are translocated in a soundscape which gives us a chance to perceive the distance and currency of the text at the same time.
Voices from far away, coming from a time after the end of time, combine to a distrurbed and interrupted transmission of a report. They narrate from an unprecedented moment of a first encounter.
They report from the nightmare of paradise, from the horror of the nameless. They reason the necesssity, to replace nature by culture. They have the presumption to feverish visions of an artificial world, where even men will a maschine made of gold.

AMAZONAS A QUEDA DO CÉU!
Music Theater about Amazonia based on the myths of the Yanomami
Austrian First Night
Music, samples: Tato Taborda / concept part II: bernhard ensemble. aftern a text by Roland Quitt / concept part II: Tato Taborda, Roland Quitt
Comissioned by SESC/SP-Brazil and the City of Munic
The Fall of the Sky is the view from close by, the view of the indigen, the Yanomami and their shamans. Their myth of the creation is narrated and listening as the dominant sense for orientation is put in the center of experience. Out of the perspoective of the Yanomami the white people are represented by the incarnation of Xawara, the spirit of mischief.
The music is composed ba Tato Taborda from Brazil, who involves moments of indigene sounds and soundscapes in his composition.
On stage a lbyrinth. Artists and audience share this space likewise. It is just as dark as it is in the Amazonian rainforest; ears become eyes, they define the perception and - an extreme case - the ears hellpt to survive.
Because: "Once you SEE the jaguar, you are dead already."

MEDIA-ECHO:

But no kitschy world-music-phantasies, no dubious idylls: Composer Klaus Schedl builds up a wild msuic of pure energy, which partly interlocks spoken and sung sounds and finally drives the performer to a phantasy-linguistic self renunciation. (TILT)

And as we have Phil Minton on stage - besides Katia Guedes, Gernot Heinrich, Gerd Kenda, Christian Zehnder, there is a lot of excentric vocal-dramatic art to experience. Minton´s erruptive sound-poetry completes the incidencies on this misic-theatrical topos of encounter effectively with ambiguity.

Ljubisca Tosic/DER STANDARD

A labyrinth full of electronic and live generated sounds (music: Tato Taborda), presented by instrumetalists from "piano possibile" and "die reihe". Almost like in a forest the audience is walking amongst actors, singers and dancers, a frontal narration is replaced by a sesnsible perception, which is mainly conducted by listening. Director Michael Scheidl knows how to use this medial possibilities to achieve consistent representation of a more than current topic.

Opera in 3 Acts
Music: Franz Koglmann
Text: Alfred Zellinger
World Premiere / Coproduktion Wiener Festwochen & netzzeit
Comissioned by netzzeit

Hard Working! Hard Selling! is the motto of the multinational trust Gen&BRain, which presents its brand new product - the ultimate chip - at a top secret meeting to its top manager, who are elected to merchandise this chip. Implanted directly in his brain, the human being will be directly ejected into cyber space in order to be finally online 24 hours a day. Having the economic world domination in mind, these leading managers outdo each other with their stratgies for merchandising the chip: The battle for profit maximization turns men into absurd combat-machines, who deploy their hard- and soft-skills, in order to completely eliminate all of their opponents. They have the craft of hostile - enchroachments, - low blows and -acquisition at their fingertips, in private life just as well as in the battle against competitors in business or in operations´against protesting activists. AktivistInnen.
Alfred Zellinger, former top-manager at diverse international corporations gives his characters a minimized Twitter-language, a mixture of economy-jargon, advertisement-slogans and fragments of soap operas to communicate, an artificial condensate of his life-long experience in "the eye of capitalism".
With great ambition to experiment Franz Koglmann in its composition oscillates between different musical eras and music styles – Classic, Ars Nova, Pop, Jazz, Rock, Noise and Cool Jazz. This results in a relentless economy-crimestory - and of course equipped with the irresistable, sensual "Koglmann-Touch".
